SF Community Colo One Year Birthday Party

SFCCP Birthday Party Command Center

Debriefing!

The one year birthday party of SFCCP was a good time with a lot of people meeting virtual friends and co-workers for the first time. There was a simulpartycast with SFCCP volunteers in Sao Paulo: we streamed video/audio to them, they streamed audio to us which provided our music and we chatted via IRC at the party's command center (yes, the party had a command center). We were also joined by Micah from Seattle CCP, who was piped into the party via irc directly from the Seattle Community Colo facility! We've put up some of the irc party highlights.

A hacker documentary from the 80's provided some entertainment and at some point, Stallman's rendition of "Share the Software" was being played, so... yeah, things were off the hook. Javier blessed us with some delicious food.

There are more pictures on our Flickr account. It was a fun night, and now we can look forward to our birthday party in 2009 which will be bigger and better!

What

This is the one year birthday benefit party for the San Francisco Community Colo. We're going to do all kinds of stuff. Like any party, we're going to socialize, drink alcohol and eat food. We'll listen to music but we've also got some hacker footage from the 80's to check out. And, we will be video simulpartycasting with SFCCP volunteers in Campinas (Brazil) and somewhere in Europe because there are SFCCP birthday parties planned there, as well.

Who

Who should come are people who want to socialize with other non-profit organizers, geeks, free software fans, digital rights advocates, independent media producers, hackers. Who should come are people who share our values of freedom of speech and protection of privacy on the internet. People who believe in a zero-tolerance policy towards commercial infringements on the public internet. People who believe in open source transparency as the future in many different areas of life, not just software engineering. Or any combination of any of that stuff.

Help

This party is supposed to be a benefit to help SFCCP put an end to our current expansion freeze. But, if we spend more money putting on the party than we take in, that could be construed as a failure. We don't want to be failures! We want to be winners!

The point is -- help us out with the party. There's really easy ways you can help support our efforts to protect community-based free speech and privacy, two important values that are under attack by all kinds of powerful forces. Here's how you can help:

* Bring people to the party

But use common sense here -- we don't want it to be like that party in Sixteen Candles.

* Mention us

Send people the link to this page, or mention it on your blog, forward it to relevant lists, or put a link to it on your site. Here's the link: http://www.sfccp.net/wiki/party

* Remember it's a benefit

We're going to be up-front about how this whole event is a benefit for SF Community Colo. SFCCP is an all-volunteer operation and a lot of people have donated their time over the past year. Others donated money or became a Supporting Member. But we've relied on the core organizers group to fill in the gaps (and there have been a couple big gaps!). So, the point is, bring some extra cash to the party for the SFCCP box.

* Print flyers

There is also a downloadable PDF file that you can print, cut into 4-squares, copy and give away. Here's the link to the PDF: http://static.sfccp.net/img/sfccp-party.pdf

* Bring alcohol

The party needs alcohol. The more people who bring alcohol, the less SFCCP must spend on alcohol. Every little bit helps make this party a benefit.

* Bring food

Same logic as the alcohol.

So, that's what you can do to help. Everybody could do some stuff on that list. It's a community endeavor!

Distributed Video Simulpartycasting

The party is going to be extended to other continents via the magic of video simulpartycasting. SFCCP volunteers currently traveling around Europe will join the party from somewhere in .eu, SFCCP volunteers in Sao Paulo (Brazil) will join the party and, possibly, we will be joined by SFCCP volunteers in Campinas (Brazil) who could further extend our reach by broadcasting the party on TV Livre (pirate television). Party-goers will be able to chit-chat, flirt, etc with our international guests through video and IRC.
